Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
