A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its duties in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
